Lucknow: Rallying behind Trinamool Congress (TMC) chief Mamata Banerjee, Bahujan Samaj Pary (BSP) supremo Mayawati charged Thursday that the West Bengal Chief Minister is being targeted as part of a conspiracy to divert attention from failures of the Modi government.

“It is now clear that under the present Chief Election Commissioner, Lok Sabha polls are not being held in a totally free and fair manner,” the former Uttar Pradesh CM told reporters here.

The Election Commission (EC) curtailed campaigning in West Bengal under pressure of central government, she further charged.

The EC ordered Wednesday campaigning in nine West Bengal constituencies to end at 10.00pm Thursday, a day before its scheduled deadline, in the wake of violence between BJP and TMC workers in Kolkata.

Deputy Election Commissioner Chandra Bhushan Kumar had said that it was for the first time that such an action has been taken using constitutional powers of the poll panel.

The EC’s action came after parts of Kolkata witnessed widespread violence during BJP president Amit Shah’s massive road show in the city. A bust of 19th century Bengali icon Ishwarchandra Vidyasagar was also vandalised during the violence.

Congress announces candidates for 7 Lok Sabha, 20 Assembly seats in Odisha - Orissapost

Bhubaneswar : The Congress announced Friday the names of seven Lok Sabha candidates in Odisha for the upcoming elections. State Pradesh Congress Committee president Niranjan Patnaik’s son Navajyoti will be contesting from the Balasore constituency while spokesperson for the party in Odisha, Satya Prakash Nayak is contesting from the Puri seat. The party has also nominated two women candidates among the seven declared for the Lok Sabha polls. Along with the seven Lok Sabha seats, the party has also announced the names of 20 candidates for the Assembly segment. The names of the other candidates are Fakir Mohan Naik (Keonjhar-ST), Madhumita Sethi (Bhadrak-SC), Brig KP SinghDeo (Dhenkanal), Dharanidhar Nayak (Kendrapada), Pratima Mallick (Jagatsinghpur-SC). Naveen opens innings 5.0

Bhubaneswar: Naveen Patnaik, who won the state elections with a resounding margin, took oath as the Chief Minister for a fifth consecutive term Wednesday. A 20-member Council of Ministers also took oath along with Patnaik at the Idco Exhibition Grounds here. The Chief Minister-designate was administered the oath of office and secrecy by Governor Ganeshi Lal. The newly-elected BJD MLAs also took oath as ministers, including 11 of Cabinet rank, at the swearing-in ceremony attended by a host of dignitaries. Along with Patnaik, 11 Cabinet ministers – two of them new comers, four ministers from the outgoing Cabinet and five former ministers were also sworn-in. Similarly, among the nine ministers of state who were sworn in Wednesday eight were new faces while one was the minister in the previous government.
