Dreams Dashed for BJD Deserters Who Joined BJP

Bhubaneswar: The dreams of a number of senior leaders and former legislators who shunned the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) to join the saffron brigade seemed to have shattered Thursday as election results showed them their last minute decision was a not a fruitful attempt.

As per the latest trends of the Lok Sabha as well as the Assembly Election, till the time of filing the story, the fate of many such party deserters seemed to be going nowhere. Former Kendrapara MP Baijayant Panda who left the regional party to join the saffron brigade was one of the latest victims of the people’s mandate.

Despite his tall claims of people’s massive support in his constituency, people voted against Panda and favoured BJD’s Anubhav Mohanty. Almost throughout the day, Panda seemed trailing behind Anubhav who was chosen by the regional party to leave Rajya Sabha and contest against the beleaguered former BJD MP from Kendrapara, Baijayant Panda. Panda was earlier suspended from the party while later he left the party on his own, only to join the BJP later.

Similar fate was also meted out to the former Nabarangpur MP Balabhadra Majhi. Majhi, anticipating denial of ticket, moved to the BJP bandwagon which was seen as an aggressive force in the 2019 elections. However despite his last minute switch to the saffron brigade, Majhi too was seen being defeated as per the latest trends at the time of writing this report.

Similarly, former BJD leader and ex-minister Damodar Rout who jumped onto the saffron bandwagon few days back was also seen to be rejected by the people as he was also trailing in the Assembly elections from Balikuda-Erasama segment of the state assembly.

Jagatsinghpur: Infighting, Heat Wave Rattle Parties

Jagatsinghpur: The election to the Jagatsinghhpur Lok Sabha constituency and its Assembly segments will be held April 29 during the fourth phase of polls. However, the usual sheen is missing in the campaign in Jagatsinghpur Assembly constituency although just five days are left for the polling. Observers said that this is due to the infighting in all parties, the heat wave and the lack of coordination among party workers and their leaders. All political parties are conducting roadshows, meetings and door to door campaigns, but that has failed to impress voters. The campaigning so far has been lacklustre, but was expected to pick up after the third phase of elections Tuesday. This time the BJD has not fielded its senior leader Bishnu Das from Jagatsinghpur Assembly seat. Instead the party has fielded Prasant Muduli as its candidate and has fielded Bishnu Das from the Tirtol Assembly seat (reserved). Muduli is the incumbent MLA of Balikuda-Erasama constituency in the district.

Panda Wanted to Head LS Panel to Help Imfa: BJD

Bhubaneswar: The Biju Janata Dal (BJD) Thursday targeted the BJP candidate for Kendrapara Lok Sabha seat, Baijayant Panda, alleging that he wanted to be the chief of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Finance to help his family business. BJD spokespersons Sulata Deo, Lenin Mohanty and Sasmit Patra addressed a joint press conference here and said that former MP Panda desperately wanted to become the Chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Finance in 2014 so that he can help his family business grow. “Panda’s only interest was to ensure that his mining company Imfa got billions as loans from banks and financial institutions.
